GSTR-2A Reconciliation: What It Is, How It Differs from GSTR-2B, and How to Do It

GSTR-2A is a dynamic, auto-populated statement of your purchases, built from the returns your suppliers file and updated every time they file or amend one. Reconciling it with your books shows which suppliers have reported your invoices, including late filings, while GSTR-2B remains the statement on which you actually claim input tax credit.

What is GSTR-2A?

GSTR-2A is a view-only statement of your inward supplies that the GST portal fills in automatically from returns filed by others: GSTR-1 and IFF from your suppliers, GSTR-5 from non-resident taxpayers, GSTR-6 from input service distributors, and TDS and TCS details from GSTR-7 and GSTR-8, along with import data for goods.

Because it updates as soon as a supplier files or amends a return, GSTR-2A for a given month can look different today from how it looked last week. That is useful for tracking supplier compliance, but it is also why it is no longer the basis for claiming credit.

Why GSTR-2A and GSTR-2B differ

  • Late reporting. If a supplier reports an invoice after the cut-off for a month’s GSTR-2B, it appears in GSTR-2A for the original period but only in a later month’s GSTR-2B.
  • Amendments. An amendment changes GSTR-2A straight away, while GSTR-2B for a past month stays as it was generated.
  • IMS actions. Invoices you reject in the Invoice Management System do not flow into GSTR-2B.
  • Different content. TDS and TCS details are part of GSTR-2A, not GSTR-2B.

When to reconcile GSTR-2A

  • To see which suppliers have reported invoices late, and chase those who still have not.
  • To review a past period after suppliers have filed amendments.
  • Before the annual return, to make sure nothing reported for the year has been missed.
  • To check TDS and TCS credits reported by deductors and e-commerce operators.

For the monthly credit claim itself, reconcile GSTR-2B; see our GSTR-2B reconciliation guide, which also covers the mismatch types to check and what to do about each.

How to reconcile GSTR-2A

  1. Download GSTR-2A for the period from the GST portal (Returns dashboard, then GSTR-2A).
  2. Export your purchase register for the same period, with supplier GSTIN, invoice number, date, taxable value and each tax amount.
  3. Clean up the data so invoice numbers and GSTINs are formatted the same way in both files.
  4. Match on GSTIN and invoice number, then compare taxable values and tax amounts.
  5. Review the differences: invoices missing from GSTR-2A are the ones to chase with suppliers; invoices in GSTR-2A but missing from your books may be unrecorded purchases.

Reconciling GSTR-2A with TaxTurbo

TaxTurbo reconciles your purchase register against GSTR-2A with the same rules it uses for GSTR-2B: exact matches, invoice number and taxable value mismatches, wrong tax classification, minor variances, split invoices, GSTIN mismatches and duplicates. Every row of the Excel report carries a plain-language reason, and about 50,000 invoices are reconciled in roughly 5 seconds.

Frequently asked questions

GSTR-2A is an auto-populated, view-only statement of your inward supplies. It is built from returns filed by your suppliers and others, and it updates continuously as they file or amend those returns.

No. Since 1 January 2022, input tax credit is claimed on the basis of GSTR-2B, the static monthly statement, under Section 16(2)(aa) of the CGST Act. GSTR-2A remains useful for tracking supplier filings, but it is not the basis for the claim.

The most common reason is that the supplier reported it after the cut-off for that month’s GSTR-2B. It then appears in GSTR-2A for the original period straight away, but only in a later month’s GSTR-2B. An invoice you rejected in the Invoice Management System will also not flow into GSTR-2B.

Yes, as a complement to GSTR-2B reconciliation. It shows late and amended supplier filings, gives a view by the invoice’s own tax period, and includes TDS and TCS credit details that GSTR-2B does not.

Many businesses reconcile GSTR-2A quarterly and before the annual return, while reconciling GSTR-2B every month before filing GSTR-3B.
